Morning Walks from New Haven, Connecticut on Vimeo.
Christina Lindstrom is chapter leader for Amercorps Alums CT. She has lived in New Haven for 5 Years and says she loves it here, citing the music and art and community as all reasons.
We met up with Tina on one of her walks in the morning. On this particular walk, it was exceptionally foggy. The air was thick with moisture, as she walked her dog through East Rock Park across Rice Field. Her shoes were soaked.

Video produced by Stereomedia Creative Services - distributed by Nhv.Org
For Pete's Sake: A Westville Experience from New Haven, Connecticut on Vimeo.
If you caught our article from the other day, you'd have been there for this excellent pizza party sponsored by iSliceNhv, the acclaimed pizza place in town. The family suggested donation was $30 and the party was basically open to the public.
The reason for the fundraiser was because Dominic Paglia agreed to an operation where he gave 55% percent of his liver to his uncle, Pete. The surgery was performed May 20th 2014 at PennMedicine, and according to the family went remarkably smooth (see video).
Interviews included in the video are:
Dominic (organ donor)
Dave (organ transplant recipient)
Donald (father of the donor, brother of the recipient)
Chris (wife of Donald)
Justin (recipient's son)
There may be a few others mixed in there. I believe Mike, the bartender from Da Legna, is in there somewhere playing soccer towards in the beginning.
It's true; the Paglias are a remarkable family. And they're just one example of some of the amazing people you're going to learn about in New Haven, here on Nhv!

Local Documentary Storytelling
Topics:
Meet Fellow Citizens
Part of the goal here on on the site is to explore the local environment and discover new people. This is Episode 2 of the BooSlick Show. BooSlick (Jahmal H.) and 'Nolo (Technology) discuss a variety of topics, first touching on the subject of New Haven's history of rap music in the 1990's.
They run off a list of people who they acknowledge as being foundational members of the rap music scene during that time period.
They explain what got them into making music in the first place. And as always, BooSlick kicks a freestyle, this time with scenic view of New Haven from on top of East Rock in the background. You can visit his site and see all of the episodes (so far there are only 2) at BooSlick.Com
Stay tuned for more episodes of the show as a new one will appear every week. It's one of the more creative programs available on the local internet at the moment. Future topics will include basketball, deejaying, health, education, and more. All good things.

Irving Pinsky,
Meet Fellow Citizens
Reminder to click "720p" under "Settings" (the gear icon located roughly just about right ^ there)
This is Irving. He's a local character who occasionally gets onto talk radio to share his points about pets, politics, and peoples' pensions. I only say the last part because it goes with the alliteration, and that's precisely the kind of political stream of consciousness to expect from Irving J.
Some of his better points in his upcoming show:
- Republican businessmen as presidents destroy economic growth
- Guys shouldn't go hunting drunk, or invite their 10 year old daughters to hunt either
- His dog likes snacks
- Obama would be better to continue as president than to elect Mitt Romney.
These are just his opinions, and he's entitled to them. Some may not agree, but all will find his persona entertaining. You can put up your rants here on the internet as well.

BooSlick Chronicles - Only on NHV!
Topics:
Meet Fellow Citizens
As an experiment in film, I'm spending 9 afternoons with Jahmal, from Newhallville who collects high fives around the neighborhood like Mario collects coins. He has great ideas, and seasoned talent. We know one another through a mutual friend, DJ Remarkable, who worked at Cutlers in the 1990's. I bought all of my records as a kid from Mark, who recently crossed paths with me and we began discussing the possibility of doing a show with Jahmal. These will appear on his site, as well as future episodes on both here on the main site, as well as the Music Blog.
The formula that we came up with is kind of a combination of what an actual normal afternoon of hanging out in Newhallville is really like. You can also get to the show via BooSlick.Com
Boo Slick Chronicles Episode 1. from New Haven on Vimeo.
This is part 1 out of 9 which we'll be working on over the next few months. If you have questions for Boo Slick, post them as comments and we'll try to work that into the next show.
Next episode's focus is homelessness and we're going to go to the New Haven Green to talk to more people about their personal experiences. Enjoy this 6 minute video. The full series should probably be a full 45-minute watch, with interviews, conversations, and freestyles all interwoven into one.

Meet Fellow Citizens
New Haven is a bike-friendly city with a condensed downtown. Families can bike to work or to school, as in the case of Sara and Peter and their three kids. They're part of several families who commute via bicycle to their school, Cold Spring.
Nhv.Org spoke to Sara and took the commute with her, Peter, and their kids. This is what Sara had to say:
Compared to driving?
"From us to ride from Edgewood to Fair Haven, it's 20-25 minutes, so really there is very little differential if you drove regularly, partially because there are red lights and such." Drivers pass you in a huff and then you end up riding right next to them at a red light, and you're stopped just as they are."
How do you feel about the safety of riding bicycles to commute during rush hour?
"Many people were supportive but people talked about it, and there was worry that it wasn't safe or something. But three years later, we've seen a real growth. A few weeks ago, we did our own little 'bike to school' day, and the truth is there are families at our school that can't because they live elsewhere, on the shoreline. We had 12 families do it, and that's great, that's local."
What about the kids riding versus being passengers?
"When we started, the older boys were 6 and we could haul all 3 of them on one bike! We knew that as the boys got older, the capacity to ride them changed. They're actually really proficient on their own bikes, and that's the question of safety. They can ride great themselves, and people think, 'why would you still be hauling your kids on a cargo bike?' They can ride often for recreation, but not always for transportation. We're just trying to make that move right now."

Meet Fellow Citizens
Have you ever wondered about your fellow citizens? Maybe you would like to know what makes them tick. Here we have a series of interviews and occasional events, a series known as "Meet Fellow Citizens," a most useful resource to get to know your neighbors.
In the first episode, we talk to Hans S. who is the founder of Giftflow.Org, which is a sharing economy website. He is a computer programmer and recent Yale graduate, and he is in his kitchen preparing a pot luck dinner. Later on, in the same video, we bring you to MakeHaven, where we see what Marcus and the rest of the crew is up to.
In the second video, meet Vin. He recently graduated from the Yale School of Forestry, and he is an avid paraglider. In this episode, Vin prepares to paraglide from East Rock and discusses the focus of his studies, as well as his experience as an adopted tribal member of the aborigines.
These are people you might meet when you're crossing Elm Street, or walking down State Street to the train station one day. They are folks, just like you, who live in New Haven and call it their home. Complete with music from local DJ/remixer SpacePirate, as well as some ambient footage of workers painting new pedestrian pathways in the road at Bradley and Orange Street, this is a nice slice of life here in the Elm City.
Why Focus on The "Elm City"
I'm not sure why they still call it the Elm City, because there are hardly any elms after the Dutch Elm Disease in the middle of the 20th century decimated the local elm tree population. At its present time, New Haven enjoys more scenic sycamores than any other tree. They are the predominant tree with the shedding bark that you see often. But that seems like something from another article!
Stay tuned for more ongoing local features. A showing of the most recent videos from April and May will take place at BookTrader Cafe, and will be announced once an agreement has been made.
