An Analysis of public Calendars.

The NhvEvents Calendar System with Google™ has more potential to work better for all citizens than many of the existing local events calendars; both events coordinators, and potential events attendees have a better chance of success.  Below is the InfoNewHaven Calendar.  The reason it looks so mixed up and has so many repeat entries is on account of the following:
  • There's nobody really observing the content on the calendar itself in an administrative role, keeping the content on there to be non-redundant and accurate
  • There's no color coordination between the topics of events, whereas on the NhvEvents Calendar, outdoor events appear in green, music scene events are in purple, and so forth.
  • Anyone can post to it, so there's no oversight or training among contributing entities with regard to what types of events go up there.
Other calendars that exist which are similar are ANDI (which as many of the same problems but seems to cater to the same crowd, perhaps more arts and university arts related), as well as Lee Cruz' GnhCommunity Calendar, which tends to steer events regarding community activism related events.  If all of these calendars were to exist and to be properly curated by the parties responsible for their creation and existence, they would actually be able to be useful to the public.  As it is, though, the public needs a reliable calendar.  That's why there's this.

The mobile application ANDI is another option:

Go To A Show.

The local music scene enters events directly into a google calendar.  This has been made possible by Miyas Gift Certificates.  Thanks Miyas!!!  I hear they're opening up an Italian-inspired sushi place called Momma Miyas.  That's only what I've heard.

There's events listed as far away as May!  If there's one community that knows how to work together on a great project, it's the music scene.  Thanks to everyone that has participated in this social experiment.  After just a month and a half after an initial announcement, the response has been amazing.  Now let's get people to go see some local music.  Here's what you've been missing!

To find out more about the bands that are listed on the calendar, you can google them, or better yet you can cross-reference them on a soon-to-be-developed Band List, which is still under construction.

Annual Youth Day Event on Saturday, January 14th.

You should come to youth day, and here's why.  "All we're gonna do is encourage you," sings Shaylah McQueen, in front of the library.   She's the project's Director of Expansion.

Youth Day is organized by a group of young people in New Haven, most notably the director, Sabir Abdussabur, who is currently at Amistad Academy.

The event will include contests, games and prizes.  The atmosphere will promote community, cooperation, and positivity.  The challenges are meant to encourage individuals to unlock their potential, and express themselves in creative ways.  There will be an emceeing contest, where poets improvise rhymes on the spot.  In addition, there will also be a beatmaking station, provided by Stereomedia.Org.  The station will provide kids each a 30-minute opportunity to compose a song on a computer.  The songs will later on be merged into the emceeing part of the event.  Among that contest, there will be others involving popular videogames like Rock Band and others.

Youth Day takes place on Saturday at the New Haven Library's Main Branch, located downtown at 133 Elm Street.  The public is fully invited, and it will be in full swing from 11am - 6pm.  Young people with any interest in observing or participating are precisely who this event has been designed for.

A preview of the event.

The event will also be summarized in a post-event documentary which will replace the graphic below, which will also be featured here on TownofNewHaven!  See Calendar for concise details.

Site Update (Technical Improvement)

One of the more innovative features of this website are the streaming calendars.  The website takes information directly from over 50 different places including music event organizers like The Space, community organizers like Lee Cruz, and parts of local government, namely The Office of Cultural Affairs.

Thanks to local internet wiz Ben Berkowitz, all events are automatically tweeted to all 300 local followers of the @nhvorg account once posted.  You can have access to that.  We hope that number will grow, and it has already since this web domain was opened earlier this year.   The people who already follow are generally considered those with their ears to the ground in search of cool new local information.  It also tweets the #Nhv tag, which retains a high-volume following of watchers in that part of the internet.

Now you can view the Nhv.Org calendar in five different ways, depending on your interest!  Here are some examples of each category, and what each represents.  Click Calendar anytime from the menu above.  Readers can also catch it in the column to the left while reading the original content articles on the site.  There's also a neat and clean mobile version available from any smartphone's internet browser.

Any music event can be posted here.  Art openings are also posted here.  Street Festivals and those sort of things which involve live music can also be found.

*NEW!  Now Posting Criterion Cinemas "Movies and Mimosas" and latenight  showings of classic older films in there as well (next update soon 9/12/12).
(Calendar does not display new movie showtimes).

POSTING EVENTS
One of the neatest features of this calendar system is that someone might stumble across a frisbee game which takes place at a time that could be followed by an Observatory open showing.  Make the most of your day by seeing everything that New Haven has to offer, in a clean and organized and most importantly accurate calendar system.

If you'd like to post events, you don't need to contact the site every time you wish to make an announcement.  The site will give you access via your Google Calendar account.

Your announcement will fit into any of the categories described.
Keep in mind the description before checking off the box.

Here's the form to apply for free calendar access  It adds exposure of over 500 views per week, presently, to an audience of local people- all potential attendees.

Thanks for using the system.  There's even a specially-formatted mobile version of the site which you can view anytime from your phone.  It was pieced together using original coding!

Fine Print
Nhv.Org reserves the right to grant or revoke calendar publishing privileges to any individual or organization.  Since event announcements are public, we can not be held accountable for mistakes that you publish.  Inaccurate information will result in the revoking of publishing privileges, because the reputation of the site is dependent on the quality of information.

Posting Events.

Once you have been accepted, you can follow this link for instructions on how to post any event to the #NHV public calendar.  http://stereomedia.org/Webskills/CommunityCalendar/

All you need is a Google account.  Follow the instructions and you can have access to post events directly, without an intermediary!  Tutorial and technical support is available to help you if you have trouble.

Here is an example of a complete calendar post.  It contains the Host and Event name in the title (in that order).  The date and time is correct.  The actual physical address is listed in "where."  This one is someone's own description.  It's preferable to copy from the press release.
