Missing 43 Students Part of Mexico's Violent Legacy, Parents Say

A long way from Mexico, a discourse on the state of human rights in the country-with the missing 43 students at the center of it-took place. Activists and parents of the students held a vigil outside the Yale office building of former Mexican president Ernesto Zerdillo -a current Yale professor who has been accused of human rights violations himself- yesterday afternoon. More here.

Confirmed: New Haven Has Common Sense.

A Baseball Mitt
"It’s hard to say exactly who wore the first glove, but some reports claim that catchers were wearing work gloves as early as 1860. A pitcher for the by the name of A.G. Spalding claims that it was New Haven first baseman Charles C. Waite who, in an 1875 game against Boston, first had the audacity (i.e. common sense) to take the field with a glove. Maybe “audacity” isn’t quite the right word. Though there were no rules against gloves, Waite tried to preserve his masculinity by wearing a tan, flesh-colored work glove, hoping no one would notice. People noticed. And Waite was ridiculed mercilessly by fans and players alike. Nonetheless, he persevered."

Post-Debate Conversations on Broadway

Conversation took place last night with @reknowinfo downtown around the area of Elm and Broadway, comparative in Cambridge to Harvard Square in terms of its role as a cross-section of major streets as well as walks of life.  We asked people what they thought of the debates.

In this video, Jeff from Re-Know asks a range of questions neatly handwritten on a piece of paper to those willing to engage him in a conversation about what people thought of the debates, just moments after the event was over.  You'll find some old characters (Irving Pinsky, Joe Comfort) as well as some other folks who were willing to converse with Jeff.

Expect more of this sort of thing from the creative folks at Re-Know.  Viewing parties are being planned at Elm Bar for future debates as they occur.

#WorldNews Worth Watching!

I recognize that this has nothing to do with New Haven, but this is by far the most interesting thing I've seen on the internet in a while.  The Tardigrade is a fascinating being.  The closeup makes them appear as if made of cloth.  "Basically it's a little caterpillar which looks like bear claws.  They have a mouth, digestive tract, nervous system...  They're similar to us.  They're also like insects, in that they have an exoskeleton.  We don't know what other species they're related to, because they're so different.  They can withstand 2 or 3 hundred degrees below zero celcius.  Vacuum of space.  The tardigrade can withstand all of these extremes."

This is the kind of video that Nhv.Org strives to achieve.  "Did tardigrades come from space?  Anything is possible."  Fascinating.

Remembering Neil Armstrong

New Haven Courthouse: Flag at half mast for Neil Armstrong
Neil Armstrong is a name that will be remembered.  He will forever be the first person to ever walk on the moon.  Here are some of his most famous words:

"That's one small step for (a) man.  One giant leap for mankind."

If you'd like to read more about him, try reading about Neil Armstrong on Wikipedia.

Local Band Nominated for VMA

Jimi Patterson hand-painted every single frame for this full-length animated music video, using a rare technique known as "rotoscoping."  The band is "Mates Of State" who you can find listed in the local bands section.

You can still get your drinks personally handed to you by the same man who created this great video, although probably not for long, at Crown 116.  The competition at the VMA's is Daft Punk for best animated music video.  You know who we're rooting for.  Woooo-oo-oo-ooooo-oo-oo!
