Bernie Sanders in New Haven on Social Media

The Green was partitioned between people who went through metal detectors, and those who freely stood at the far side of the flagpole.

Bernie Sanders went to Willoughby's on Chapel earlier that day for coffee.

He also toured neighborhoods with Gary Holder Winfield, a state senator in Connecticut.

How Was The Show Last Night?

Salt N Pepa on The New Haven Green from New Haven Local Scene on Vimeo.

There was a jam-packed crowd on the New Haven Green last night for the 90's-acclaimed Rap group Salt N Pepa, who performed such hits for the crowd as "Push It," "Whadda Man" of course, "Shoop." Watch the video to see what it was like. Some interviews of the crowd at the end also highlight the overall atmosphere of the show.

The NHVMusic video team obtained some crowd footage, and tried to get the police officers to dance (but they wouldn't, although one did laugh with us). What was the best thing about it? Really, the diversity of people enjoying the music. People of all ages. Folks from all kinds of backgrounds. They asked a bunch of people why they came, and what they enjoyed about it. Watch the videos to hear what they had to say.

The 2:26 video at the top features the ambient music of DJ Shadow from 1994. The other shorter Instagram video was produced this morning in order to promote the upcoming 2:26 video which was released this evening.

The videos in this article were produced by The New Haven Local Music Scene.

Smilow Cancer Center - Closer To Free

The concert was presented by Smilow Cancer Hospital in New Haven, CT. Logistical support was provided by the city in terms of law enforcement presence and Parks Department support. The night happened completely without incident, other than the incidence of everyone having an amazingly good time. Proving, once again, that #Nhv just might be the greatest small city in America.

Haircuts on the New Haven Green

A local salon in New Haven has recently been rendering their services voluntarily to the community of displaced people on the Green for the second year in a row. Miss Kay, the owner of
the salon, mentioned to us that many people in society are just a paycheck away from becoming displaced, themselves. This sentiment has provided her with the belief that it's one creative way to offering support to the community of people living in places like the New Haven Green.

illegalize Homelessness

New Haven Corporation Counsel Victor Bolden has introduced amendments to the Park Ordinance  that will criminalize the downtown homeless population.  Among other things, the legislation will apply opening and closing hours to the New Haven Green and make “camping, cooking, open flames, sleeping overnight and/or erecting tents or other shelters on the Green” and other parks ticket-able offenses. Such changes will be seriously detrimental to people who call the Green their home.

The Legislation also includes provisions that will make events in New Haven parks cost-prohibitive for community groups by forcing organizers to pay for permits and police protection.

Today: Talk History with Robert Greenberg.

People who enjoy history and New Haven will enjoy Rob's display.
A  historical demonstration available to the public
Today, talk history with Robert Greenberg at the site of where the Lincoln Tree fell exactly one year ago.  The opportunity is there.  Folks were discussing the details of the event.  Rob will be showing the original stones that were buried there, to indicate to people that the green was in fact once a cemetery, and that James Hillhouse moved the stones (but obviously not the bodies, as we found out later).  Historically accurate?  Yes.  Mr. Greenberg brings you the past in 3 dimensions, using materials from his own collection to help our heritage come to light.  Only for the next few hours!  Otherwise, join him next year.

Spooky New Haven 2013 (video)

Get ready this Halloween weekend for a really interesting one.  Remember the eventfulness, a year ago, when Hurricane Sandy knocked down the Lincoln Oak.  This year, the New Haven Museum is featuring an event on Halloween, and Robert S. Greenberg will be hosting an event on the Green itself, the night of the 30th.  Stay tuned.

Dream-Savin' New Haven.

What's the Future? from #NHV on Vimeo.

Yesterday was considered a success to the many people that assembled on the green to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the "I Have A Dream" speech of Martin Luther King.

On hand were a number of different organizations, including Love146, New Haven Promise, and Operation Smile.  Folks like the poet Rick Best, and artists like Katro Storm were there.  Young organizers like YouthDay founder Sabir Abdussabur was also in attendance.

Watch the video; it's a good opportunity to see where young people are at today, with regard to how they hope to shape their world for the better.  We all have great ideas; but re-branding the city away from its past reputation as a place to brandish firearms ("gun-wavin' which so conveniently rhymes), to replace that with a new and better unofficial title:  Dream-makin' New Haven.  Life-Savin' New Haven.

That was the message bestowed upon the crowd by Frank Brady, who performed with the microphone yesterday afternoon in rememberance of Dr. Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech.

Tonight on the New Haven Green.

Food Vendors Prepare
If this is the way you like it, then you will get it.  Because it's going down.  You might also know KC and the Sunshine band as also responsible for the song that goes "Shake shake shake.  Shake shake shake.  Shake your booty."  Such lyrics are unmistakable in a society so keen on observations.

With so many amazing local bands, it's kind of disconcerting to go to a concert to hear something you could just by turning on nearly any nostalgic radio station when there are bands like True Blues, the Mates of State, and even Child Actor which is a local band who broke the top 20 College Radio charts.  Or Small Multiples, who were featured on NPR Music.  The list goes on and on, of talented and often disregarded local performers who are passionate about making the best music, and being true professionals at it.

Oficial Flyer
Local bands need a hand, in getting their careers advanced.  Many such groups already have local followings and would love an opportunity to play on the New Haven Green.  So I guess what this post is about, to the people that care and the few who have the power to change things...  Why not consider next year selecting at least one local band?

Lincoln Oak and Time Capsule Update

Saturday, April 27th.   A crowd of people assembled on the New Haven Green today in honor of the 375th anniversary of the city's founding.  A commemorative ceremony was held for the replanting of the Lincoln Oak, which fell back in October of 2012 during Hurricane Sandy (see video).  On hand were city hall officials like John DeStefano, Vivian from the Office of Cultural Affairs, Drew Days (a proprietor of the NHV Green), US Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro as well as local historian and artist Robert Greenberg.
But all focus was on the replanting of the Lincoln Oak.

Replanting the Lincoln Oak from #NHV on Vimeo.
On the green today you could also find horse-drawn carriage rides, exhibits from the Neighborhood Music School, as well as two stages with different sounds coming from each.  The fervent focus of the afternoon was on the replanting of the Lincoln Oak, where it was said that the president Abraham Lincoln once gave a long speech.Drew Days announced that there would be contest for kids to determine what is inside of the much-anticipated time capsule, which was discovered by Robert Greenberg when the original tree fell back in October of 2012.  "There are brass buckles around the cement.  That means there's something in there." His suggestions were ignored for months until he finally convinced the New Haven bomb squad to bring their x-ray equipment to determine if, indeed, the cylinder beneath the Lincoln plaque is, in fact, hollow and perhaps contains something inside.  The squad brought the equipment to the Parks Department, where the cement cylinder was being kept.  Sure enough, police confirmed the cylinders were hollow and contained something.DeStefano thanked Urban Resources Initiative for the re-planting and a fledgling oak was set in the same location as the mighty tree which fell, for the second and final time, on the New Haven green.

Update: The Proprietors
The Proprietors of the Green would not allow the public and the press into the process of opening the time capsule.
Update: Rob Greenberg
"I am not sure i understand why the City of New Haven and Proprietors of the Green would want to open such an important American artifact (The Lincoln Oak Tree Time Capsule) behind closed doors at Qunnipiac University in secret when it was left for "All" of the people young and old to find and view when opened.
They tossed me and any media from the important happening and a left a hand full of people to watch it, while a tiny camera recorded it. Weird and a shame. (Very Indiana Jones.lol) I'm pissed not just because i helped the story along but because the public should marvel at such an important spectacle and learn from it and not have it controlled how its viewed. I have been told that i am not very popular right now for saying all these things but i feel it is important for us to understand what our ancestors left for us to learn about them and in this case Abraham Lincoln's importance. So I don't care really if i am not liked because of what i am saying. That time capsule is "ours" as a society and not a select group of professors or city employees.

They should have at very least had a professional group or even a video class of students record it with HD Cameras from different angles. So, please comment to my post whether you agree with me or not, just so i can show the "Powers" that the people care or don't about the Time Capsule and what it symbolizes to us." --- Rob (Greenberg)

Editor's Note:  Rob's note is particularly important to this because Greenberg is proven to have discovered the time capsule.  Without his historical investigative handiwork, the Proprietors and City Hall would have no idea that there was a time capsule in the first place.

"They're trying to flank me," says Greenberg.

Best Wednesdays Downtown Ever!

Monarch butterflies are back, there's a band playing on the green, and a man dressed vaguely as a carrot, conducting himself into some improvised dance moves.  Oh, and there's also a farmer's market in front of City Hall.  Welcome to an average Wednesday in the summer in #Nhv.
