Public Works: Dialing It In

Traffic and Parking worker replaces traffic light
If you're a fan of amazing weather, then today's the day for you.  Lots of things happening this week; from the Shakespeare in the Park plays going on until Sept.1 to an opportunity to help plan a new neighborhood with some architects.

You'll also find that tomorrow at 3pm, the Dream Project will be happening on the Green. Declare your dreams there; I'm sure that to say it will be interesting is an understatement.

Get to know this place, because, if even for the time being, you call it home.  ET Phone home!

Elsewhere in town, there have been some minor other traffic lane closures.  This one is on Park and Chapel Streets.  It appears that there is a Ninja Turtle excavation project under way at that location.  There were also some lane closures on Howe Street; all in the name of civic improvement.  It takes much effort to keep a city running.  Stay tuned and we'll try to keep you informed on the latest developments, opportunities, and news in town; all in the same high definition quality of video and imagery, with all links functional and most of the spelling and grammar correct.

Desktop Background Archives

To Add To The Collection (From Saturday Afternoon)
Since it fell, the snow has become more sloppy and less pleasant to look at.  But for a few blissful  hours on Saturday, it was clean, crisp and contrasted the vibrant blue of a clear sky with no clouds.

By mid-afternoon, the juxtaposition of structures in direct sunlight, contrasted with the snow, which dominated the landscape, made for some good picture-taking.  If you would like to download files for your desktop, they're free and you can see the archives here.  There is also a link in the left-hand column to this section of the site, available anytime.

Each folder in the Desktop Background Archive is formatted for the best resolution and smallest file size.  They're compressed .Zip files that you can download as a group.  If you are a photographer and would like to contribute to this archive, follow the link to the archive and locate the contribute feature.

Post a Photo To The Site.

You can put a photo on this website with great ease, using Twitter.  Here is how:

If you tweet anything with the hash tag "#Nhv" your image should appear in the column to the left, in chronological order to when it was posted, compared to everything else.

Only editors and people with posting permissions can upload photos to "the wall."  You can get access by proving that you are a good writer who understands facts and information well.

Also want to mention that Greenwell at 44 Crown is actually Greenwell Coffee & Tea.
And the tea is also quite good.

Some Old Photos. And Some New Ones.

In 1999, Broadway was redeveloped and several old buildings were knocked down.  In their place now stand J. Crew, Urban Outfitters, and everything in between.  I was 19 at the time, and had a Canon AE.  It was an old school SLR, and the place I got the photos developed was called "PhotoSnap" and it was on the corner of Park and York.  These are the photos I took.  Many years later, in this present day, I now have much better equipment (as does the rest of the world).  With the same intentions as I did when I began, I continue to document life in New Haven as it occurs.  That's why Nhv.Org is a good site.   It's  also helpful for the useful information on the calendars, as well as all the great self-reporting you can find here.

Sure Was Rainy Today!

Chances are, you spent much of today indoors, somewhere dry, and possibly either assembling a house out of popsicle sticks or on the computer.  Rain is nothing new, but computers are; now, we can share more information about anything, including something as simple as rain, than ever.

West Rock Avenue in the 1980's after flooding
New Haven is no stranger to flooding, and one area that receives the worst could be the area surrounding the West River.  That's because it's a low-elevation area.  There are several dams north on Route 69 and Route 63, which are both roads that split from Whalley Avenue.  Those dams affect the volume of the West River.

The river tends to flood when it rains heavily.  If the dam breaches, Westville suffers immense damage.

Here are some pictures taken by Victoria Applegate, a typesetter and choir director at a Catholic Church in the 1980's.  These were taken with her analog Canon single lens reflex camera.

Rain can affect peoples' lives greatly.  Water, just in a broad sense, is vital to the survival of human beings.  Too much is clearly a problem, in the case of flooding.  But in the event of droughts in the MidWest USA this year (2012), the lack of rain is equally as devistating.

The world relies on balance.
