Gordon Skinner and EleMar Gallery: Brought Together by Project Storefronts

 Bread and Circuses

After a successful stint at Project Storefronts Popup55, longtime collaborator Gordon Skinner was introduced to EleMar Stone Distributer owner Mark Krueger. For over the past year Krueger has been carving out a piece of his storefront for an art gallery of the same name. After their first meeting a partnership was born and Skinner’s show, Bread and Circuses: Portraits and Collages by Gordon Skinner will open on September 20th.

"The artists I seek to work with” says Kruegar, “at my gallery are all committed to advancing their enterprises as businesses.  Intelligent partnership increases the possibility and probability of success."

In addition to being a gallerist and a businessperson, Mark Krueger is also an artist in his own right. "For me, its immediate application is inside people’s houses where I install decorative stone interiors.  In the last three or four years I’ve started to use stone to create artwork."

Art Show at the New Haven Museum

Various cross-sections of the Lincoln Oak, used as art.
This month, check out some of the artwork produced at the New Haven Museum by various artists who specialize in sculpture. These were works of art that were produced by using cross sections and cuts from the original Lincoln Oak, which was dedicated to Abraham Lincoln and planted on the New Haven Green in 1919, and then later fell to the winds of Hurricane Sandy.

There is a video of the panel discussion with the artists featured in Nothing is Set in Stone: The Lincoln Oak and the New Haven Green. The artists elaborated on the inspiration and process behind their new work. Discussion was moderated by Zeb Esselstyn of City Bench.

Greenberg's Lincoln Oak Artwork. October 30th 2013
The art will be on display at the museum in the room upstairs around the rotunda to the left.

The concept behind the show was peculiarly similar to an art project developed earlier and independently by a different artist not included at the show in the museum, who about a year ago obtained a cross-section of the Lincoln Oak to represent a timeline of events which took place throughout history during the life of the tree. That particular artist, Robert S. Greenberg, presented his cross-sectioned art piece in public on the New Haven Green back in October of 2013. This was around the same time that the museum was releasing the contents of the time capsule found under the plaque, which has been verified as originally discovered by Greenberg.

Artists included in the project are Lani Asuncion, Susan Clinard, Erich Davis, Michael Quirk, Jeff Slomba, Rachael Vaters-Carr and Alison Walsh.

Site Projects Public Art | Whispering Galleries, an interactive digital artwork

Whispering Galleries comes alive with each new visitor.

MEET THE ARTISTS! Saturday, April 26, 3-5pm @ NHFPL, 133 Elm St.

Based on the diaries of an anonymous New Haven county shopkeeper from the 1850s, this viewer-activated digital artwork is accessed on a computer screen through a gestural interface – the LEAP motion controller – and experienced in augmented reality.

Presented in honor of New Haven’s anniversary, and part of Connecticut at Work, a year-long conversation about the past, present and future of work life in Connecticut created by Connecticut Humanities, the artwork will shed light on the history of work environments in New Haven.

The artists explain: “the voice of the diary sends whispers to the present through a series of erasure poems” and describe “the keeper of the diary” as someone who “worked with his hands: as a woodworker making handles for tools, sawing lumber, and sweeping out the shop; as a violinist making music at intimate gatherings and church occasions; and as a composer, writing pieces for performance at the local school. In daily entries, the author's week is measured out by hand-work.”

Whispering Galleries will be on view in the branches of the New Haven Free Public Libraries, opening April 26th, 2014, 3-5pm, at Ives Main, 133 Elm Street, New Haven, CT.

Amaranth Borsuk Ph.D. is a scholar and published poet, whose work focuses on textual materiality -- from the surface of the page to the surface of language.  Brad Bouse is a developer interested in the creative applications of code (www.bradbouse.com).   Together, the artist team created,Between Page and Screen (Siglio Press, 2012), a digital pop-up book in augmented reality which has been exhibited nationally and internationally.

Site Projects Inc. has been presenting world-class award-winning artworks in New Haven’s public spaces since 2004.  Our exhibitions are free, open and physically accessible to all.  Recent artworks include: Night Rainbow, by Yvette Mattern (2013) & Square with four circles, by Felice Varini (2010).  This is Site Projects second collaboration with the New Haven Free Public Library.  For more information, visit: www.siteprojects.org.

Connecticut at Work is traveling across the state through December 2014 and features the Smithsonian Institution’s The Way We Worked exhibition, with stops in seven communities, which add local focus with community history exhibits, book and film discussions, author talks, performances and more.  Connecticut at Work is an initiative of Connecticut Humanities, a non-profit affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.  In the New Haven region, Connecticut at Work is a partnership with New Haven Free Public Library and the Arts Council of Greater New Haven.  The Connecticut tour of the The Way We Worked is made possible by Connecticut Humanities and Historic New England.  For a calendar of events and more information, visitcthumanities.org/ctatwork.

Art at the NHFPL - Reception Saturday

Kristina Zallinger "Flash in the Pan"
30"x30" acrylics on canvas
"Color Out of the Blue"
Paintings by Kristina Zallinger

New Haven Free Public Library Gallery
(lower level) 133 Elm Street, New Haven, CT
Artists' Reception: Saturday June 1st, 2-4pm

"My paintings are all about color and texture," says Kristina Zallinger. "I live in a world surrounded by it. With each of them I try to dazzle the viewer with delight! I have been told that my work makes people happy. That is my intention. Often people miss the presence of color. I like to remind them of it. I isolate a flower garden, a piece of glass, my approach to a waterfall and any images that I see in my mind. The color and texture both create a feeling of depth within the canvas. I often quip that 'color is my middle name!' "

*******************************************************
Artists' Reception: Saturday June 1st, 2 to 4 PM.
Exhibition: May 30 - July 2, 2013
Gallery Hours: Monday - Thursday 10 AM - 8 PM; Friday and Saturday 10 AM to 5 PM.

Breckfess and Milksop at Greenwell (Recap)

The music was good last night at Greenwell on Crown Street in the Ninth Square, with Milksop:Unsung performing at Mike Angelis' art opening.   The paintings are reasonably priced and will be on display for the next month or so.  The location where they'll be residing is a comfortable coffeeshop in the lower part of New Haven, south of the Green, on the opposite side from Yale Campus just a few blocks away from the #Nhv Train Station.

Michael Angelis at the InsideOutNHV Mural Last Summer
If you're arriving from #Nyc and you happen to be back in town, why not drop in and check out the local art and get yourself a tea or a smoothie?
Make your first stop Greenwell Coffee and Tea. They have affordable smoothies as well as Michael Angelis' paintings, the occasional live performance, and such.  Here's their menu.

Milksop is a band which is pieced together with banjos and upright bass guitars.  With a name like Milksop, of course they're easy to find out about online.  You can find their music on their entertaining website.

Maybe you like banjos.  There's a chance that you might not; either way.  You will like Michael Angelis' paintings, whoever you are.  And you wouldn't know his website unless you knew it was called Breckfess.

A short video about his actual painting process should be available soon.

Upcoming Art Show at University of New Haven

The Gazers: Selections From the Collection of James Reed, Opening: Jan. 31, 6-8 p.m
On display from January 31-Febuary 28, 2013, Seton Gallery:
Honoré Daumier, Detail of Les Baigneurs (The Bathers),
1840, Lithograph
The experience of walking into Milestone Graphics in Bridgeport, CT is that of peering into an old master’s workshop. Once inside the studio, one is greeted by a Griffin lithography press, two custom built etching presses, worktables, and flat files full of wonders. It is an honor to be invited by the master printer, James Reed, who owns and operates the studio. For some contemporary artists, the studio is a solitary environment.

For Reed, his shop is a collaborative space for both national and regional artists.

Silas Finch Sculptures On Display At Hope Gallery

Silas Finch is a local sculptor who grew up in Cape Cod.  His father dealt antiques and Silas was surrounded by strange old objects thoughout his life.  It seems natural that he would learn to build new things with the old stuff.  Materials he likes to use are old newspapers, skateboards, old devices, twine, leather, bones, old wood, nails, musical instruments, type blocks.  If you watch the slideshow, you'll recognize some of these materials in the pieces.

His work is on display at Hope Gallery, which is in Morris Cove.  Check out the slideshow below.

Hope Gallery has a great blog, too.  Check out this article, it's a compilation of tattoos where incorrect grammar and spelling is highlighted.

Line Drawings by Daniel Eugene at Cave à Vin on State St.

If you wanted to find something interesting to do on a Sunday afternoon, one place you could find yourself is at the Cave à Vin wine bar on State Street in New Haven.  On this particular afternoon, Daniel Eugene presented an exhibit of his fascinatingly detailed illustrations.  These will be on display for a few of the upcoming weeks, and make for an excellent addition to the walls of State Street's latest inclusion to the local scene, providing a venue for both music and art, which is something we all appreciate.

Each of the drawings are like meditations, as Daniel expressed in a reading of some of his recent writings this afternoon.  He believes that we all find the same source of inspiration from within, and that by sharing it's our way of being more connected with the world around us.  How very true that is.

You can continue to see his works on display on State Street.  A map to the location has been embedded below for your convenience.

Stay tuned and in the meantime you can continue to find great events on the Calendar.
Be a part of #NHV...  Maybe you are on this map somewhere too!

Arts Organizer Katro Storm Representing

Katro Storm is a local artist with tons of background, experience, and connections within the underground artist community, and has been here for quite some time.  Recently he pieced together a show at Gallery 305k with a group of talented artists, whose work is on display in the video.  Much of it would be considered "Street Art" when in fact many of these artists have already made the transition from street to gallery, with places like Gallery 305K opening their doors to the great talent that exists, which would otherwise go perhaps more unnoticed.  The events page for the show, called Street Dreams, is here.

Official text from the show:
Gallery 305K is pleased to welcome independent Curators Katro Storm and Jahmane. Their show "Street Dreams" looks at the way we each interpret the iconic phrase. A street dream looks very different based on the street you are looking at. Works from artist such as Ellen Volpe, Paul Duda, Kristen Thomas,Michael Johnston and more will give us there unique view on the subject.

Hey, I know it's not New Haven, and this site is supposed to be all about your #1 Hometown, but I say stuff about NYC enough so there's no sense in ignoring Bridgeport.  Hey, Americorps pays attention to BPT!

More To The Story
Aside from being a talented artist himself, Katro has taken it to the next level by facilitating other artists to have shows.  We will definitely get to learn more about him as I incessantly try to convince him (and everyone else I know) to join in a game of spontaneous role playing, described by some as "Townie Larping" where we form scripts based loosely on ourselves and our reality, and play it off on video to appear as nothing like how we actually are.  Why?  To confuse people!  Well, sort of.  Partially that.  And then partially just to make life a little more interesting.

GCC Long Wharf Art Gallery: Mike Angelis (Urban Landscapes)

You should definitely partcipate in comments on the quiz.

Show Information (see monthly arts calendar for details)

Solo show at Gateway Community College (Long Wharf Campus) Opening Reception March 1st, 4-6pm. Show runs from March 1st to March 31st. 60 Sargent Drive, New Haven. breckfess.com for more info.

Michael Angelis is a great painter.  He's the guy DiMeo needs, to honor every construction project
properly with a huge oil painting.  Imagine if .1% of every project went towards an oil rendition of the zone in its initial construction phases?

My personal favorite part of the landmark painting seen in the particular image of this post?  The tunnel that begins over from where the main entrance of the Coliseum used to be, travels under the building and over to actually where the Omni Hotel is.  We used to go in there and find secret entrances into the Chapel Square Mall, where we would skateboard the halls late at night.  We got to be friends with the guard.  His name was Oscar.  He didn't give a damn.

Pop Quiz New Haven!
What's the building that is in the location seen on the flyer?

The winner gets a big ole' stack of flyers from Breckfess Mike, as well as a half dozen first-edition NHV.Org stickers.

Bonus Question to those participating (you can guess):  Where do you think Mike's studio was at the time?
