Neville Wisdom Talks Upcoming Fashion Show (Video)

Dresses by Neville Wisdom
New Haven is full of a bunch of interesting people. One of them is fashion designer Neville Wisdom, who wisely chose New Haven as the home base for his clothing operations around the world.

Brand new to his facility includes the highly technological automated table which cuts patterns. His work staff digitize his original designs, import them into a computer, and then 'print' them onto fabric which cuts out the designs. It's high tech, yet still hands-on; all the work is still done here in Connecticut. Though with a robot on staff, Neville has to work a lot faster.

"Phew!" says Neville.
"It's been really crazy," he states, referring on how difficult it is to keep up with the pace of life. Neville designs fashion for everyone - and by everyone, we mean women. His designs are for any type of woman. What's remarkable? Custom fit is part of every purchase at Neville Wisdom's locations. His manufacturing center is in the heart of Westville, along with his storefront on the ground floor; he also has a 2nd retail location downtown in the 9th Square.

Fashion Shows have become a regular part of his seasonal routine, with runway models sampling out his latest designs. These are dresses which are conceived and invented in the mind of Neville himself, and made custom here in town. It's a one-of-a-kind experience, to actually have a one of a kind piece of clothing.

Check out the video we produced for Neville as part of an ongoing series. We hope you'll find him as entertaining as we do. HahahH! And get tix ($10 plus service) right here.

Pie Tasting in 9th Square on Friday

CitySeed presented a pie tasting event on Friday afternoon in the 9th Square, on Orange Street between Center and Crown; a popular place for downtown block parties. Mayor Harp was in attendance, as a judge for the best kids' pie recipe.

We revealed the winner of that category on Instagram, just as it was announced.

Stay tuned to Nhv.Org for continuous local social media coverage, and quality videos about the city you love.

Ninth Square Report

Silas' Art Across the Street (in the window or in a video)
You should know that there are plenty of restaurants in the Ninth Square, but there is more to it than just food. The skateboarding expert known as Silas Finch has his art on display across the street from Bentara at 76 Orange, where there will be Pecha Kucha next Wednesday Jan 29, starts at 6:30pm.

Of those presenting at this event, among the most interesting is Eric, a brilliant kid. He developed HandySpeech App (download)

Pecha Kucha is an event where speakers give short presentations illustrated by slideshows that they design. Each slide appears for 20 seconds; there are a total of 20 images per each presenter. Check the lineup.

Special Presentation Tonight: LAMP on9

This is the wall where the film will be projected.

As part of a collaboration between Nhv.Org with  Robert S Greenberg's Museum, we're launching a few new original films on the wall of the Acme Furniture Building for L.A.M.P. (Light Artists Making Places).  In preparation of tonight's event, we've produced a 45-minute film, complete with over 120 different events, dating from 1637 to the near future.

The film will be played in tandem with 3 additional bonus features produced by Robert Greenberg.

The tone of the work is essentially this:  in 1645, the colony of New Haven collected its tradable goods, such as beaver fur and wheat, as well as peas.  In addition, many of the more prominent citizens of the colony were on board, and never heard from again.  They sent it all to England on what was described as the "Great Shippe."  The ship was never heard from again, presumably lost at sea.  It's now known now as the Phantom Ship, because there was a mass apparition over The Harbor in 1646, where the settlers believed they saw the ship in the clouds after a June summer storm.   Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote a poem about it.  There's a painting at the top of the stairs at the New Haven Historical Society on Whitney Avenue.

This tour de history that Greenberg created focuses on the moments which brought the city together.  Many have tried to associate New Haven with misrepresented facts about the origins of certain inventions, but Greenberg gets the facts straight, with documented evidence, sometimes more than three pieces at once, represented as images which appear along the timeline.  Many of the high resolution images come from his own source of collectibles, some of which were handed down to him from his grandfather, Simon Evans, who graduated High School with Ernest Borgnine at Hillhouse, which is one of the more obscure facts you'll learn throughout the film; complete with yearbook photo.

Greenberg's message is that tonight marks the return of the Phantom Ship; meaning that commerce and trade is ready to come back to New Haven.  "It's a celebration of the survivial and thriving of the colony of New Haven after the loss of 'The Great Shippe.'  The truth is that the Phantom Ship was the motivating force to grow and advance the colony, and it success is evident in this timeline."

The film is among the most comprehensive works about the history of New Haven that has ever been created.

This Friday: Breathe on 9

Artspace in New Haven is having an exhibit on Friday as part of the On9 Experience.

This is Pinball Golf.  It's the KidAnalog exhibit which you will see at this event.  Other providers of mini golf courses at this exhibit include Matt Feiner of Devils Gear, MakeHaven, Silas Finch, and several others.  It's best to get there any time after work, and then stay until after it gets dark.

The name of the neighborhood event is "BreatheOn9" where there will also be outdoor tables in the street for Bentara, a fashion show, a mobile bus full of vintage items for sale, and much more.

Friday Afternoon Recap

Clouds and rain gave way late in the day on Friday, as people downtown were gearing up downtown for an interesting afternoon.  Into evening, we had several different things going on, aside from cooler than usual temperatures for the past couple days, and the first real glimpses of sunlight since Weds.

At The Grove, members discuss plans for the 48-Hour Film Project, which is now in progress until Sunday.  On the table were various different genres, and each were discussed with varying degrees of fervor.  Least fervorous of all were the "zombie" genre of film, as described by one member to be a significant challenge with regard to the amount of costume makeup involved.  The best hint we can come up with?  Let's put it this way, can you imagine a Western Detective movie?  If all goes well, that's what they're going to make, hopefully, within the constraint of the 48-hour timeframe they have to accomplish it.

Simulaneously, Michael Galvin of ArtSpace disregards all joggers and passers by as he meticulously arranges the gallery in that forum.  A special "Summer Apprenticeship Show" was opening that evening and is still on display.

You can visit the Artspace Website anytime to find out more about current and future shows.

You can also visit The Grove to find out more about what makes co-working space great, and
what makes it one of the best of such places in town. Membership is easy & worth looking into.

Streating Tickets Available

Streating in the 9th Square from Our Empty Space on Vimeo.

Streating is eating in the street, and this is accomplished by finding a place outdoors in an urban environment and setting up a table.  In order to find people to attend that table, people are invited but today is the last day to buy tickets to this event.  The next streating event will be held on Broadway on Saturday July 20th from 7 to 10pm.

More info is available via OurEmptySpace:

"Our Empty Space and The Shops at Yale are teaming up for an evening of dinner, wine and good times in the middle of  New Haven's shopping district."

Tickets are $95 per person.

Ninth Square this Evening

View Streating in a larger map

The event may be sold out (last reports were that 9 tickets are still available) but another Streating (Street+Eating)_ event from OurEmptySpace is taking place this afternoon/evening on Orange Street, so try to avert that area if you're driving by following this handy detour map.

If you're into vintage furniture, also check out Acme Furniture (be sure to 'like' their Facebook page) because they're also having a street sale (see blue pushpin).

And if you would like to explore the possibility of brewing your own beer, consider talking to Scott over at Luck and Levity (around the corner from the Streating event on the map, see purple pushpin).

Going to be an interesting night!  Hopefully it will also cool off a little as the sun sets.  The weather reports for temperatures will drop to 82F by 8pm this evening.
