Ninth Square Report

Silas' Art Across the Street (in the window or in a video
You should know that there are plenty of restaurants in the Ninth Square, but there is more to it than just food. The skateboarding expert known as Silas Finch has his art on display across the street from Bentara at 76 Orange, where there will be Pecha Kucha next Wednesday Jan 29, starts at 6:30pm.

Of those presenting at this event, among the most interesting is Eric, a brilliant kid. He developed HandySpeech App (download)

Pecha Kucha is an event where speakers give short presentations illustrated by slideshows that they design. Each slide appears for 20 seconds; there are a total of 20 images per each presenter. Check the lineup.

This Friday: Breathe on 9

Artspace in New Haven is having an exhibit on Friday as part of the On9 Experience.

This is Pinball Golf.  It's the KidAnalog exhibit which you will see at this event.  Other providers of mini golf courses at this exhibit include Matt Feiner of Devils Gear, MakeHaven, Silas Finch, and several others.  It's best to get there any time after work, and then stay until after it gets dark.

The name of the neighborhood event is "BreatheOn9" where there will also be outdoor tables in the street for Bentara, a fashion show, a mobile bus full of vintage items for sale, and much more.

Silas Finch Sculptures On Display At Hope Gallery

Silas Finch is a local sculptor who grew up in Cape Cod.  His father dealt antiques and Silas was surrounded by strange old objects thoughout his life.  It seems natural that he would learn to build new things with the old stuff.  Materials he likes to use are old newspapers, skateboards, old devices, twine, leather, bones, old wood, nails, musical instruments, type blocks.  If you watch the slideshow, you'll recognize some of these materials in the pieces.

His work is on display at Hope Gallery, which is in Morris Cove.  Check out the slideshow below.

Hope Gallery has a great blog, too.  Check out this article, it's a compilation of tattoos where incorrect grammar and spelling is highlighted.

Different Slices of Orange St.

Video Notes:  Space Cowboy took it a little too far this time...

Corner of Orange St. and Cold Spring St.
The Rock To Rock bike ride event this Saturday went great, with perfect weather and amazing attendance. The Environmental community came together for the event, with tables encouraging people to volunteer for CitySeed.  The Regional Water Authority was there to promote, well, water.  The restaurant crowd was there, as well, including Jason from Caseus, Bun from Miyas, and other restaurants around the area.

Elsewhere on the same street (on the same day), local artists were celebrating Springtime with a festival of music and vintage cars.  Local sculptor Silas Finch displayed his recently award-winning sculpture, made out of 99% bicycle parts.  Rocko Gallipoli  was there, too, showing off his refurbished VW collection and discussing his next art show at the tattoo shop and gallery in Westville, Keys on Kites, where on May 12th he will be displaying some of his latest stencil art, which is top notch, in my opinion.

Total Shout-Outs:  8
