Neighborhood Music School (NMS) invites the public to attend a Fiddling Techniques Workshop with Stacy Phillips onSun., Oct. 25,1 - 2:30 p.m.in theNMS Recital Hall at 100 Audubon St., in New Haven.Phillips, a Grammy award-winning fiddler and dobro player, will teach fiddle tunes and demonstrate what American fiddling is all about. His workshop will be aimed at violinists who have at least 2 yrs. playing experience, but anyone who wishes to be introduced to fiddling will benefit. The fee is $15. Following the workshop,Stacy Phillips and His Bluegrass Characterswill perform afree concertfrom3 – 4 p.m. The band features Phil Zimmerman (mandolin), Stacy Phillips (fiddle and dobro), Pete Kelly (bass), Red Kaufman (banjo and former NMS student), and Andy Bromage (guitar).
Stacy Phillips is an internationally acclaimed resonator guitarist and violin player. He has performed with top acoustic musicians all over the world and has three solo albums. Phillips is the featured artist on the Grammy award-winning album “The Great Dobro Sessions.” Stacy is the author of over 25 books and DVDs on various aspects of his chosen instruments. Hendrickson-Smith, a
saxophonist and flutist, is known for his remarkable tone, soulful approach and
blues-driven melodies. He is one of the most sought-after musicians in New York
City and currently plays with The Roots on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy
Fallon, as well as with the Loston Harris Trio at the Carlyle Hotel. He has
released ten jazz albums as a leader, with his most recent, Live at Smalls, garnering critical acclaim from The New York Times.

worldwide through numerous live appearances and recordings with an incredibly

The Strand
Band is comprised of Hendrickson-Smith, as well as Clark Gayton on trombone,
Eric Finland on Hammond Organ, Al Street on guitar and Erick Kalb on the drums.
“We have a
residency at The Strand Smokehouse in Astoria every Sunday, hence the name,”
says Hendrickson-Smith.
Hendrickson-Smith connected with NMS through his friendship with NMS’s Noah Bloom,
also a musician and Director of Programs and Community Engagement, who said,
“Ian brings his soulful, funky, acoustic, R & B brand of jazz to NMS
Presents. His band is well versed at bringing the party wherever they go, and
we are so fortunate to have world class music right here on Audubon Street.”

The Stepkids are a nationally recognized music group on the label Stone's Throw. Some of its members are from the greater New Haven area. Their projectionist David Pond currently lives in New Haven and is even mentioned on their Wikipedia page.
Most interesting in this video is the recollection of Dan, the bassist, of their performance at this year's 2013 Bonnaroo Music Festival in Manchester, Tennessee which boasts an attendance of 80,000 people every year [wiki]. As he recalls:
"Because of the rain, everyone ended up packing in under the tent. And we were also the first music of Bonnaroo, so literally every note had more meaning. When I fierst jumped up and played one note on the bass just to check it, people were cheering. Then I went up to the mic and timidly, I was like, "one two." Then the sound guy [sic] grabbed the mic, and he was like "ONE TWO!" And everybody went crazy. So just before we even played it felt like the spirit of rock and roll was in the building." (@1:07)

If this is the way you like it, then you will get it. Because it's going down. You might also know KC and the Sunshine band as also responsible for the song that goes "Shake shake shake. Shake shake shake. Shake your booty." Such lyrics are unmistakable in a society so keen on observations.
With so many amazing local bands, it's kind of disconcerting to go to a concert to hear something you could just by turning on nearly any nostalgic radio station when there are bands like True Blues, the Mates of State, and even Child Actor which is a local band who broke the top 20 College Radio charts. Or Small Multiples, who were featured on NPR Music. The list goes on and on, of talented and often disregarded local performers who are passionate about making the best music, and being true professionals at it.

Local bands need a hand, in getting their careers advanced. Many such groups already have local followings and would love an opportunity to play on the New Haven Green. So I guess what this post is about, to the people that care and the few who have the power to change things... Why not consider next year selecting at least one local band?

The New Haven and New York based music group, Small Multiples, was given some subtle acknowledgement on today's "All Songs Considered" feature on the NPR Music Website.
Craig Hartley, one of the musicians in the group, had this to say about being featured on All Songs Considered: "I found out 2 nights ago. It feels nice."
This also coincides with the release of their new official music video for the song, "Make Up," and you can watch that on the NHV Local Scene Page [music video].
When asked whether he takes the train or drives into NYC to perform, which he often does, Craig responded that he usually drives, and that this past Friday's train accident does not impact the way that he feels about safety aboard Metro North.
