Elm Shakespeare: Pericles in Edgerton Park this August.

Elm Shakespeare: Pericles in Edgerton from New Haven, Connecticut on Vimeo.

One of the best "perks" about Willoughby's Coffee, says Elm Shakespeare Company's Managing Director Daniel Fitzmaurice, is the stunning amount of talent within the ranks of Willoughby's coffee employees. A good example, Gracy Brown, maanger at the Church and Grove location, provides an electrifying performance as the narrator Gower alost every night this month in Edgerton park throughout the ElmShapespeare performance of Pericles.

You can see her performance along with some extraordinary fight scenes, as described in the video where we interview a long-time patron and appreciator of Elm Shakespeare. As a perennial member of the audience in Edgerton Park, he recalls the elaborate set for a King Richard play one year, and a comedy which involved a Vespa on another occasion. There is no video or photographic recording allowed during the play itself, but we got to know the crowd and caught up with some of the performers before the play to see what makes them excited about Elm Shakespeare Co.

Visit ElmShakespeare.Org and plan on attending an excellent outdoor performance this upcoming weekend, one of the best opportunities available in New Haven during late summer. The show typically ends at about 10:30 and last night the temperature deserved a sweater and long pants. The crowd assembled at approximately 6pm or earlier, and there were groups of people indulging in picnics. The play itself sounded great, with every performer directly connected to a PA system with a wireless microphone. The lighting and technical aspects of the play were superb, and every line was met not only with professionalism but with full delivery. Every scene was perfectly performed and it's the kind of thing you'd really expect of Broadway (especially since some of the actors including Colin Lane have performed on Broadway with other notable names like Daniel Day Lewis). A definite must-see.
