Cyclist Improvement Plans Abound

A plan has been proposed to raise private funding to rent a parking spot for an entire year and convert it into a parking spot for bicycles.  Here is the link to that plan.

This is an alternative plan to the idea of paying for and converting a parking spot into a bicycle "corral" and it uses a piece of city topography otherwise not in use for any practical purpose.

Proposed results would be the same.  Fewer tipped-over bicycles in the area of Broadway where there is much foot traffic.  More space for cyclists and a more welcoming zone for cyclists to park.
A parking spot is smaller than the area known as the Broadway Triangle (aka the "Tree Bump")

  • Racks can be removed if land is approved for different use in the area of the Broadway tree bump triangle.
  • Safety of metal fence keeps cyclists away from traffic while accessing bike (versus at a parking spot in street)
Traffic is jealous because they are at a light, while bikes are parking in areas (a) and (b)
But these are just ideas.  What's really on the radar for improvements for cyclists in New Haven?

From Dept. Of Transportation Jim Travers:
"Cycling enhancements that are on my radar are the installation of bike boxes around Gateway Community College, installing bike repair stations and air pumps on bikes in high use locations, and introducing bike lockers."

Suffix Information
It had been mentioned in the comments section of this article that this plan was also thought of by someone else:
"wow, really looks like you took that lallaments ghost guys idea, added a picture, and are taking the cred... nice one."

That article is located here but the idea makes perfect sense to people with sensibility, and would only be evident to those who are actually not personally invested in the success of the project.

Other than we want a bike rack.  Also, wait until you see what the site says tomorrow about trains.
