SELFIE - What is a self-portrait in the age of the selfie?
New Exhibit
Features Self-Portraits by City Gallery Artists
In 2013, the word
“Selfie” was announced as being the Word of the Year by the Oxford English
Dictionary and defined as “a self-portrait type image that one has taken of oneself,
typically with a smartphone.” Which made some local artists wonder: What is a self-portrait in the age of
the selfie? Their responses appear in the new exhibit SELFIE featuring work by 13 local artists, on view at City Gallery from May 30 - June 30, with
an Opening Reception on Sunday, June 2, from 2:00 - 5:00pm.
In SELFIE, City Gallery
artists Judy Atlas, Meg Bloom, Joy Bush, Jennifer Davies, Roberta Friedman, Joyce Greenfield, Barbara Harder, Jane Harris, Kathy Kane, Sheila Kaczmarek, Susan Newbold, Tom Peterson, and
Michael
Zack respond to the question through their paintings, sculpture, textiles, prints
and photographs. Come discover how art can reveal a vision of the artist, both inside
and out.
The exhibit is free and open to the public. City Gallery
is located at 994 State Street, New Haven, CT 06511. Gallery hours are Friday -
Sunday, 12 noon - 4pm. For further information please contact City Gallery, info@city-gallery.org,
