City Gallery presents KACZMAREK & KANE

New work by Sheila Kaczmarek & Kathy Kane

New Haven's City Gallery presents KACZMAREK & KANE, featuring new work by Sheila Kaczmarek and Kathy Kane, on view from November 1 - December 23, with an Opening Reception on Friday, November 9, 5:00 - 7:00pm, and an Artists Talk on Sunday, December 16, 2pm, at 994 State Street in New Haven.

KACZMAREK & KANE showcases two distinct points of view using different media—painting and sculpture—and demonstrates the balance and counterbalance between the work. Both artists draw upon the landscape for inspiration.

Sheila Kaczmarek’s sculptures derive from various marine and plant forms reminiscent of coral and fungi and evoke the complexity of nature, asking: “what happens when we extrapolate from the world around us and recreate with the human hand?” The use of clay, multiple firings, and a variety of glazes results in these complex forms.

Kaczmarek has studied at St. Martin’s School of Art, London, UCLA, and the Academie de Boitsfort in Belgium. She apprenticed at the Guilford Art Center Ceramic Studio, is the president of the Guilford Art League, and is a founding member of City Gallery.

Kathy Kane’s gestural paintings also rely on nature, employing the landscape for information. After applying paint by pouring or brushing it onto the surface, then spraying it with water and moving the support, she waits to see what the paint will do before manipulating it with a variety of untraditional tools. Using a new palette that is less restrained than in the past, she may bury color under veils of black, white or leave unveiled to experience the wildness or softness of nature.

Kane has maintained a studio in Erector Square for many years. She is a member of the Guilford Art League, City Gallery, and the Connecticut Watercolor Society.

The show and events are free and open to the public. City Gallery is located at 994 State Street, New Haven, CT 06511. Gallery hours are Thursday - Sunday, 12 noon - 4pm. (The Gallery will be closed Gallery closed November 22-23.) For further information please contact City Gallery, info@city-gallery.org, www.city-gallery.org.
