City Gallery Presents IN THE MIND’S EYE, featuring Judy Atlas and Jennifer Davies

The shapes and forms of nature reveal themselves IN THE MIND’S EYE of the artist, distinct and specific to each individual and her experiences. See this interplay of nature and creativity at City Gallery’s March exhibit featuring Judy Atlas and Jennifer Davies. IN THE MIND’S EYE will be on view from March 1 to March 25, with an Opening Reception on Sunday, March 4 from 2-4pm (Snow Date: March 11), and a concluding Artists’ Talk on Sunday, March 25 at 2pm.

Judy Atlas is an abstract artist. Her paintings, monotypes and collages are expressions of the patterns, shapes and movements found in nature and everyday life. Her work relates to places and landscapes, real and imagined, external and internal—like the watery views of Reflections and Blue Dreams featured in this show. Atlas has taught watercolor painting and collage at Creative Arts Workshop (New Haven) since 1998. She is a member of City Gallery, and her work has been featured in numerous solo, group, invitational and juried shows.

Jennifer Davies’ work revolves around the individual characteristics of her handmade paper. Translucent or opaque, indigo dyed or left natural, various fibers are layered and joined by stitches. Though some of the imagery, like Slow Float, suggests abstracted natural forms, the large monotypes, like Leaf Poem (1), are directly printed from banana leaves onto Davies’ handmade papers.

In addition to many solo and group shows, Davies’ work has been included in traveling exhibits such as Fiberart International, and The Paper Runway. She is a member of City Gallery; The Friends of Dard Hunter, a group devoted to hand papermaking; Fiber Artists Collective; and Surface Design. In 2012. she was awarded a Connecticut Artist Fellowship Grant to further her opportunities and experience in the field of Fiber.

City Gallery is an artist-run gallery featuring contemporary art. Exhibitions of painting, printmaking, sculpture, photography, papermaking and/or mixed media rotate monthly. The Gallery promotes creative interaction among artists and the public and contributes to New Haven as a vibrant regional center for the arts. Since its opening in 2003, its members have represented some of Connecticut’s finest artists, many of whom have earned numerous awards for their work.

The IN THE MIND’S EYE show and events are free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. City Gallery is located at 994 State Street, New Haven, CT 06511.
