Representatives of Elm City Cycling will conduct a lighting “sting” on Monday, November 5, 2012 at these locations between 5:00pm and 7:00pm.
● Orange Street at Humphrey Street (east of downtown)
● Elm Street at Howe Street (west of downtown)
Cyclists riding without the required lights will be “stopped” (politely asked to pull over to the curb), given a “ticket” (a postcard with an explanation of the relevant Connecticut law) and a red LED light with a belt clip. The back of the “ticket” is a coupon for lighting equipment from several area bicycle shops: Cheshire Cycles and Repair; College Street Cycles; D’Aniello’s Amity Bicycles; The Devil’s Gear Bike Shop; North Haven Bike; and Tony’s Bikes and Sports. Each participating bicycle shop is honoring the coupon by offering a 20% discount on lighting equipment up to $50 in value until December 31, 2012.
Connecticut state law requires cyclists riding after dark to use a front head light visible from 500 feet, and rear and side reflectors visible from 600 feet. Elm City Cycling and other cycling experts also strongly recommend a red tail light for increased visibility and safety on the roads. In the wake of Superstorm Sandy, ECC members point out that whether there’s a natural disaster or not, cycling is often the quickest, most convenient way to get around town.
Elm City Cycling is an advocacy group incorporated in 2008 and working to make greater New Haven friendlier, safer, and more accessible for cyclists and pedestrians.
