Nhv Daytrips: The Berkshires

All this could be yours in just about 2 and half hours of driving along incredible Appalachian autumn scenery, if you know where to find it.

In order to fully appreciate the Berkshires, you should arrive during the weekend right after it peaks.  The point when foliage peaks in the Berkshires is the first two weekends of October.  It's only 1° of latitude northern, but the elevation is about 3000' of difference.  It is more enjoyable to appreciate nature with more solitude, and there will be fewer people the last two weekends of October.

Every once in a while, we like to add a new recommended day trip to nhv.org; these are typically places you can visit in one day, with the use of a regular passenger vehicle and the accompaniment of your favorite allies.  Today's recommended day trip is way up Route 7, not too far from the upstate New York border: Kent, Connecticut.  It's about an hour away, even if you take only the back roads.  This is the type of place where folks like Henry Kissinger would most prefer to call home.  It also has a pretty nice waterfall.

New York is home to some of the best "Stoop Sales" in the country, and thankfully traffic on Sunday mornings is not that bad.  If you leave at the right time, it's only a 90-minute drive.


Nhv.Org occasionally recommends great day trips for Sundays.  These are designed for groups, couples, or families.  This one follows this itinerary:

• Leave NHV early.  Try to hit the road by 8 or 9am. 
• Park in Brooklyn.  Take the Whitestone Bridge to Brooklyn.  Park in Park Slope. 

On the Nature of Stoop Sales

In New Haven, a stoop sale is known as a "tag sale."  In other parts of the country, these are known as "Yard Sales."  If you do not have a yard, and only a stoop, then you can call it a stoop sale.  Certainly if there are no tags on anything and the prices are negotiable, it can't be relied on as a "tag sale" either. 

Sunday mornings in Park Slope, there are more than several dozen so-called "stoop sales" going on at the same time.  These are all within walking distance of eachother.  They also contain many items bought by people who no longer need them, and can be yours for prices that are well below that which they were originally paid for. 

Later on, try the Brooklyn Flea, located over by the water near Williamsburg.  More great very affordable antiques and vintage stuff still exists and awaits you there.

Mass MoCA in a Day!

Did you know that only a 3 hour scenic drive away from #NHV is an amazing little art museum nestled in the Berkshires? Well, there is! And, it's called Mass MoCA (Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Arts). Located in North Adams, it's a lovely rt.8 or a less scenic 91 drive that is well within a day trip's limits. Mass MoCA is actually not in any sense little, a restored 19th century factory with over 100,000 sq feet of space being used for art installations, the perfect place for an afternoon stroll of contemporary art. My favorite part of the museum, don't forget to head outside *you may have a hard time finding it if you didn't know it was there*, through the boiler plant, and see the trailer in the sky. After your amazing time at Mass MoCA, head over to Williamstown, a 5 minute drive away and enjoy their tasty food and quirky shops on Spring st. Enjoy!
