Friday Afternoon Recap

Clouds and rain gave way late in the day on Friday, as people downtown were gearing up downtown for an interesting afternoon.  Into evening, we had several different things going on, aside from cooler than usual temperatures for the past couple days, and the first real glimpses of sunlight since Weds.

At The Grove, members discuss plans for the 48-Hour Film Project, which is now in progress until Sunday.  On the table were various different genres, and each were discussed with varying degrees of fervor.  Least fervorous of all were the "zombie" genre of film, as described by one member to be a significant challenge with regard to the amount of costume makeup involved.  The best hint we can come up with?  Let's put it this way, can you imagine a Western Detective movie?  If all goes well, that's what they're going to make, hopefully, within the constraint of the 48-hour timeframe they have to accomplish it.

Simulaneously, Michael Galvin of ArtSpace disregards all joggers and passers by as he meticulously arranges the gallery in that forum.  A special "Summer Apprenticeship Show" was opening that evening and is still on display.

A Model City.

A wooden model of downtown New Haven was on display on a desk at The Grove yesterday, which was visible to all who found it here, sitting on that desk.

The model of the city was produced by Newman Architects and reflects some of the recently proposed changes to the area around the 34 connector, including the "Mixed Use" concept recently proposed by developer LWLP, as well as the medical bio-engineering building proposed atop the 34 Connector itself, to "Bridge the gap" between neighborhoods.


It was quite nice and would look fairly spectacular if it were filmed with a nice camera, and then added a "tilt shift" effect to that camerawork.  Then, if the same movement of the camera were to be done using an unmanned camera, or a helecopter, the two visuals superimposed would make for a very nice visual effect.  The model was built remarkably true to scale.  Nice Work!

The Grove Expands

The Grove, a shared workspace originally located at 71 Orange Street, has expanded to an additional space at 760 Chapel Street.  The new location is around the corner from the original Grove, and consists of a second and third floor. 

To understand what The Grove actually is, I suppose you could Wikipedia search for the definition of Collaborative Workspace. 

Much work went into the development of the new space.  This article features 2 slideshows and follows the progress of renovation from midway to completion.

Author Announces New Book at The Grove

John Hoda's regular job involves exonerating falsely imprisoned teenagers.  When he's not doing that, or taking down crime syndicates, he is escaping into a fantasy world about major league baseball.

Members of The Grove, a shared workspace on Orange Street, contributed to Hoda's book in various ways, from copy editing, web development, and video production to even the background music in the video.  This project became the ideal example of good work in a collaborative space.


A writing enthusiast who has been published in journals pertaining to his field of specialty, John took to the experience of writing as a hobby, and expressed how he would lose all track of time and space while fully enveloped in his process of writing.

Grove Signs Up A New Member

Have you ever wondered why the Grove is such a popular place?  It's because it has such a good atmosphere.  People say that you need a good work environment to get good work done.  Well, they have provided that for you and here is what it looks like when Slate signs up a new member.

Shin is a talented illustrator who is looking for a creative shared workspace with others.  Many people will be happy to have him on board, because quality graphic design skills are in high demand these days!
