Better than... Portsmouth? 2 New Polls.

No obligation at all, but if you really really want to vote for New Haven in the Condé Nast Traveler Readers' Choice Awards, this lovely infographic has been created to assist you in the process: 

We are presently a top contender but could use your help in pushing this effort past other cities in the region, particularly the emergent Portsmouth, New Hampshire (which is actually a very nice place, too). If you have the time to follow these steps, that would be cool.

Other contests later now include this Outdoor Magazine poll where we're literally head-to-head with Portsmouth (see the "March Madness-esque" brackets?) The Outdoor Magazine contest is a little easier to vote for, and contain a variety of different match-ups across the United States (Hilo Hawaii vs Juneau Alaska is a close call at the moment). Presently the standings for the New Haven vs Portsmouth results are tipping steadily in favor of the even-smaller city of 21,000+ on the narrow coastline of New Hampshire (yes, New Hampshire has the shortest US coastline of any state, with just 18 miles of waterfront at its southeast corner, bordering Maine and Massachusetts). 

Not to say that you have to do anything, but there will be a recall of many "better-than" teeshirts in the area if we can't somehow manage to draw just a few more votes, particularly from the Outside Magazine Poll:

Pie Tasting in 9th Square on Friday

CitySeed presented a pie tasting event on Friday afternoon in the 9th Square, on Orange Street between Center and Crown; a popular place for downtown block parties. Mayor Harp was in attendance, as a judge for the best kids' pie recipe. 

We revealed the winner of that category on Instagram, just as it was announced.

Book Trader: Vote With Your Tips

Book Trader on Chapel has been using tips as a means of calculating pop culture opinions in our area.
Now they have a Tumblr, spilling out the information performed by public financial evaluations.

With such questions as "Darth Vader or Ralph Nader?" we were particularly surprised to find that Vader won on that particular vote.  You can participate in this endeavor simply by visiting BookTrader at their location on Chapel Street, and voting with your tips on which you feel more passionately about, based on the options they set forth; sometimes several a day.  The tip jar has been divided into two separate portions.  The side that has the most amount of funding essentially "wins" the vote.

Book Trader Cafe's first search result on Google goes to a hair salon place currently, which I suppose is something of an issue at the moment.  Their actual website is Book Trader at Yale (dotcom).  In the meantime, you can read this delightful Chris Arnott article on CT.Com or perhaps watch that thing about that establishment on the Travel Channel (same link).  This old timey site was made in '04, which is almost as much fun as the Gastronomique website we found.

Inside My Fridge - A Contest

We're having a contest this month, and it's called "#insidemyfridgeNHV" where basically participants take pictures of what's inside their refrigerators, on Instagram, and these results will return here so that we can gradually see a collage of what's inside each other's refrigerators. It's our personal space, perhaps, but it's not that personal.  The Overall goal of this contest is to get that gift card!  But in order to do it, you must take a picture of what's inside your fridge.

We're not going to tell you what we're looking for, because it's essentially an artistic judgement of the results.  There is no guaranteed winner for either anyone who takes a picture of the least amount of food they have available to them, or whoever has the most beer, or who has the most amount of produce from local CSA Rojo Farm (because we'd already win).

Yes, you can win this contest.  We will mail it to you through the postal service, just as was with our last contest, the InstaRainbow Contest.  As the contest is entered by various people, tag your inside fridge photo with #insidemyfridgeNHV to appear on the website the day of the contest.

The contest is invalid if fewer than 15 people enter, so tell a few of your friends to take pictures of their refrigerated spaces.  If they win, hopefully they will share their gift card to Miya's.

The results of the contest will be posted on Friday morning at 9am.  Your photo will appear along with others like it, if you include the correct hashtag in your posting.  That's "inside my fridge nhv."  No spaces, with a pound sign at the beginning.

Where/What: A Contest

This is from @MimoCT. Where and what at Yale?  That is the question.  Respond directly to him by following his Twitter, or simply just respond here in the comment section.  The only thing we're offering here are #Nhv Bonus Points and free admission into the Yale Art Gallery any time.  

(The Yale University Art Gallery is always free to visit, but only when it's open.  Please do not attempt to climb into the gallery from the roof).

Who can get the best singular item On Tuesday?

Today, from 4-7, come downtown and search through piles of wet garbage.  Why, do you ask?  Watch the video below and see what our friend here has found in the past.  The reason is that today, the seniors have to move out.  Yale Recycling does a good job of salvaging most of the items, or bringing things that could probably be re-used over to the Ice Skating Rink, where they have a non-profits and students-only event where you can fish through a more organized pile for free.

But we would like to have a contest where you are encouraged to browse through the dumpsters yourself and with your friends.  The person who has the nicest item will be awarded a pitcher of Beer at Elm Bar, or a pitcher of Bonobo Juice at Miyas, depending on if Miyas is too crowded or not.  The winner is also encouraged to share the drink with other participants, since they already have found something that day which is of greater use to them than the other items which we will find. 

This will also be part of a video project.  Tomorrow, come back and watch what happens!
