ArtSpot! Returns November 13^th at Creative Arts Workshop   

 Back for the autumn season is the Arts Council’s ArtSpot! Arts & Culture Happy Hour. Join us for an evening of wine, refreshments and prizes at Creative Arts Workshop, 80 Audubon Street, New Haven. On view in the 2-story Hilles Gallery will be CAW’s annual Celebration of American Crafts. Wind down after work and stock up on local handmade items! Tickets are $10 for Arts Council members and $15 for non-members. Ticket includes 2 free drinks and refreshments.

About ArtSpot! Arts & Culture Happy Hour

For nearly 6 years ArtSpot! served as a regular monthly event for business professionals at various New Haven arts institutions before it ended in 2008. The events provided a wonderful way for the community to discover the arts, meet new friends and make a few lasting memories.

Our goal for the new ArtSpot! is to host the event once per season to help foster conversations about art, inspire professional and artistic collaborations and to provide a great and exciting event that the entire New Haven community can be part of.

Audubon Arts on Edge Saturday

Every June The Arts Council presents Audubon Arts on the Edge, an afternoon full of free, family-oriented music and dance performances, interactive arts-and-crafts activities, fun educational programs, and giveaways. The event always takes place in the Audubon Arts & Retail District, on the block of Audubon Street between Whitney Avenue and Orange Street. The 2014 Audubon Arts on the Edge will take place Saturday June 7, 2014, 12pm-5pm.

Illustrators Show at Arts Council Next Week

The Arts Council of Greater New Haven invites you to The Art of Picture Books: Creative Process in Visual Storytelling book signing and artists’ reception on the evening of November 7, 2013. The exhibition will run from November 8, 2013, through January 3, 2014. Eight award-winning children’s book artists from the New Haven area, in collaboration with the Arts Council of Greater New Haven, have curated an exhibition of their work, with an eye toward revealing the fascinating process of creating original work for young readers. The exhibition features the work of Doe Boyle, Frank W. Dormer, Deborah Freedman, Lynn Reiser, Sanna Stanley, Marcela Staudenmaier, Jennifer Thermes, and Nancy Elizabeth Wallace.

In this exhibition, the eight diverse authors and illustrators, working in a variety of media, have pooled talents to showcase the many inventive ways that artists reach the imaginations of children. Each artist will present work that illuminates a single aspect of developing a picture book that creatively melds words and pictures into a seamless unit. Long a literary staple as well as a first introduction to the dramatic and engaging world of art, picture books are a memorable element of childhood, carefully designed to entertain and/or educate audiences of eager listeners and emergent readers.  The creation of such a finely balanced work of art requires a particular magic, and these seven illustrators will unveil the precision and intuition that goes into every picture story.

Collecting Art Is Easy, Affordable and Fun with Somewhat Off The Wall

The Arts Council of Greater New Haven presents their annual fundraiser, "Somewhat Off the Wall" this Sunday in the lobby of 360 State. The event will be emceed by WTNH's Jocelyn Maminta and feature artwork by some of New Haven's talented artists. With your premium ticket you can join the fun and take home an original piece of artwork, jewelry, pottery and more.

Recently it was announced that the new #hashtag for New Haven Arts events is "#artnhv"
Already it's populated entries from the Arts Council, MimoCT, and even the Bratt Museum Art Center in Brattleboro, Vermont.

Social Media is a great way to get to know any area.  Using the #Nhv tag on various platforms (Instagram and Twitter) allows you to find out very up-to-date information being reported by the very organizations that provide arts to the community, especially here in New Haven.

Exact Change 2013 on Saturday

For the sixth consecutive year, the Arts Council of Greater New Haven is pleased to partner with CTTransit in presenting Exact Change, a transit-based performing arts festival. A series of live performances on five local bus routes will take place on Saturday, May 4th, and are free with CTTransit’s regular fare.

This year’s Exact Change will bring musical performances from Jose Montiero & Friends (Afro-Latin inspired percussive and musical sounds) and The Kings Band of Harmony (Elm City’s own brass shout band).

The Elm City Dance Collective, which brings contemporary dance and culture into non-traditional spaces, is returning by popular demand, and we are thrilled to introduce Air Temple Arts and Circus Troupe, which is New Haven’s newest circus arts school.

New this year, Exact Change will include a health and wellness component. Viva! Z Fitness & Wellness will be practicing Zumba with bus riders on Route O7 on their way toward downtown New Haven. Also new and free to the public will be demo classes by with Viva! Z Fitness & Wellness and Balanced Yoga. Be at the Green at 1 p.m. to participate in these demo classes!  

All routes converge at the New Haven Green, where riders, artists and the public can mingle to the music of The Kings Band of Harmony starting at approximately 1:30 p.m., and join in the May Day festivities, which will also be celebrated on the afternoon of May 4^th on the New Haven Green.

The Arts Council of Greater New Haven is pleased to announce Web Versions, its second show at Perspectives… The Gallery at Whitney Center at 200 Leeder Hill Drive, Hamden, Connecticut, south entrance. An artist reception will take place on Saturday, February 23rd from 2 to 4 p.m. There will be an artist talk at 1:30 p.m. and origami artist Benjamin Parker will be demonstrating his unique paper tessellations process.

Web Versions was curated by Debbie Hesse and Steve Olsen. According to Hesse, “While the title Web Versions suggests the online realm of virtual interconnectedness, this exhibit explores ways artists embrace the low tech, often labor-intensive material world to present meditations on the passage of time.”

Artwork in the show, diverse in media, by Sean Boggs, Kevin Daly, Sarah Beth Goncarova, Mary Judge, Benjamin Parker, Suzan Shutan, Marjorie Sopkin and Thomas Stavovy, share a fascination with repetitive pattern, scale and color to reference traditions of textiles.

Boggs’ oversized, swirling, bulls-eye wall sculpture, constructed from fake fur and googly-eyes, creates a compelling optical illusion. Googly-eyes, a simple craft supply that evokes childhood memories of toys, dolls and school craft projects, serve as a module to create an abstract, mandala-like motorized object that turns 360 degrees so slowly that only a few sections of googly-eyes gently flicker at a time.

Geometry plays a role in the paintings on view by Kevin Daly, who orchestrates brilliantly colored, hard edge abstract shapes that are slightly off kilter to confound perceptions of order and space. 

Goncarova, in her large-scale textile sculptures, turns piles of muted, monochromatic, painted, ripped up canvas, thread, and beads into cavernous, organic topographies. These works, titled by the month(s) they were made, emphasizing the amount of time she spends creating each piece.

Mary Judge combines dry pigment and stenciled pinhole patterns in her mandalas, a process she adapted from Renaissance painting transfer techniques, that are both restrained and complex.

Benjamin Parker takes the craft of origami to new heights in his intricate, paper folding tessellations. His mathematically complex diagrams and patterns are the result of pleating and corrugating a single sheet of paper to create modular sculptural forms. 

Suzan Shutan’s organic sculpture “Loopy” is an aggregate of rolled strips of tar paper formed into molecular-like structures that transverse a large section of wall. Her use of tar paper, made in part from asphalt, warns us that these playful, whimsical forms are, in fact, created from toxic materials; here she draws attention to sustainability issues such as our need for and dependence upon oil.

Marjorie Sopkin’s colorful pastel paintings, filled with overlapping, energetic and gestural marks, create a rich tapestry reminiscent of color field painting. 

Thomas Stavovy’s etchings are drawn with delicate gestural meshes of interwoven lines that correspond to states of being.

Web Versions will be on view through March 30^th, 2013. The gallery is open to the public Tuesdays and Thursdays, 4 to 7 p.m., and Saturdays from 1 to 4 p.m.
