"Mettā  or maitrī is benevolence, friendliness, benevolence, amity, friendship, good will, kindness, close mental union (on same mental wavelength), and active interest in others. It is one of the ten pāramīs of the Theravāda school of Buddhism, and the first of the four sublime states (Brahmavihāras). This is love without clinging (upādāna)."

(Sanskrit: मैत्री) (Pali: मेत्ता in Devanagari)

Hannah Proch, a licensed massage therapist and neuromuscular massage therapist, is also a registered yoga teacher with a 200-hour training certificate (RYT200). She has created a yoga massage therapy known as MaitriBody Technique to help people, in a class she teaches at Sarah Aldrich Pilates Studio at 50 Elm 2nd Fl.

Corner of Elm and Orange St.
Says Hannah: "I've been practicing as a massage therapist almost 8 years now, and I felt that a lot of people really needed a way to take the work that we were doing in the treatment room, and apply it to their daily life. I have clients that come in not really knowing much about yoga or massage, and kind of just curious about both, and it's way to integrate that concept of massage therapy and hands on healing touch, with a yoga practice where you're going within and finding your breath and connecting to your breath in a deeper way."

"We go through a guided meditation where we kind of take the body through limb by limb and allow you to breathe in and become connected to your breath and your body. Through that, I do postural assessment with the students to kind of get them to be more connected to any compensatory pattern or imbalance in their body.

"The class is for everyone," says Hannah. "Everybody needs to find themselves and go within, and slow things down. It allows the space within the 90 minute class."

Hannah says some other things too. Watch the video to hear her entire description of the class, and get an idea to determine if Hannah's MaitriBody Technique class is for you.
It's "a really beautiful practice."
